Broken Coax Connector

Hi everyone,

I have a mobile phone that uses this COAX CBL I-PEX MHF4L TO MHF4L cable. I did not realise that a special tool is required to remove the cable. When lifting the cable the rings (see photo of wjufi card connectors) on the component ripped off the circuit board and are now stuck in the connector.

Is there a method to remove these rings from the connector or am I required to replace the cable (very undesirable).

Thanks,

Adam

Hi @adam-digikey

Could you post a couple of close-up photos of the cable connector and the board where the ring detached? That will help us see exactly what you’re working with.

When the connector ring came off, did it just detach from the board, or is there a chance it pulled the solder pads (the copper pads underneath it) off the board along with it? If the pads themselves lifted, that changes the repair.

Thanks for the reply @jon_11475 ,

I have uploaded a gallery here: My Gallery — Postimages

If you zoom into the top of the modem you can see 3 circular connectors - 2 are missing the bronze rings that are stuck inside the connectors shown in the other 2 pictures.

You can see the whole connector came off the circuit board. As a layman it looks like the circular ring connects to the board on the outer edges and does so when it was ripped off, it is just a ring inside the connector on the wire.

Removing the rings from the connector’s might be possible, but they won’t go back onto the modem. Due to how the connector functions, it might be easier to replace cables or antennas.

The bigger issue is getting the connector replaced on the modem. That is unless you are not going to continue using that modem?

If you are not going to use the modem, are you replacing it with something different?

Thanks @Steven_14444 , disappointing but good to confirm, I can send the phone back for an out of warranty repair.

I’ll just replace the modem with whatever Purism (the phone manufacturer) recommends.
