Cable and Wire Shielding Notations

You often see fragments of the IEC/ISO 11801 naming system in part numbers or examples of it in datasheets for shielded cables for comms applications, but it usually isn’t spelled out what these codes actually mean. Here’s a simple breakdown.

U = Unshielded
S = Shielded with braided strands
F = Shielded with foil
SF=Shield+Foil
TP= Twisted Pairs

/ = Divides the description between the outer layer, around all conductors on the left, and the inner layer, around each individual conductor on the right.

Let’s look at an example that you might find: S/FTP
Using the above information we can translate this and figure out that it means the cable has a Shielded (Braid) outer layer, and additional Shields (Foil) around each twisted pair.
