The D/CRCW e3 series of thick film resistors from Vishay Dale has a somewhat unique feature that can cause confusion when reading the series datasheet or looking at a distributor’s description of the product.
A good example can be found in part number 541-10.0KLCT-ND (Vishay# CRCW040210K0FKED). Our copy of the datasheet shows it as 1/16W, but the certificate of conformity states that it is rated for 1/10W. Is one of these specifications incorrect? In short, no.
In long, both are correct, as Vishay has two “modes” documented for using this resistor. The 1/16W rating applies to “standard” operation, where the temperature of the resistor itself is kept below 125C, and the drift of the resistance value over time is minimized (up to 0.5% after 8,000hrs). The 1/10W rating applies to “extended” or “power” operation, where the resistor’s temperature is kept below 155C and wider drift is acceptable (up to 1% after 8,000hrs).
