Distance Sensor Requirement – Technical Query

We are looking for a cost-effective, non-contact distance sensor for an industrial automation / robotic application. The requirement is limited to basic distance / clearance measurement; high-precision sensing is not required.
Technical Requirements
Measured parameter: Distance / clearance
Required sensing range: 50 mm to 250 mm
Accuracy requirement: ±1 mm (sufficient)_Micron level accuracy not needed
Priority: Cost effectiveness over high precision
Sensor Type
Preferred: Laser distance sensor
Open to alternative sensing technologies if they meet the above range and accuracy at lower cost
Electrical & Interface
Supply voltage: 24 V DC
Output signal:
Analog 0–10 V or 4–20 mA
Must be compatible with Mitsubishi FX5U PLC
Application Notes
Non-contact sensing only
Typical industrial environment
Compact industrial housing
Quantity

Kindly recommend suitable sensor part numbers available on Digi-Key that meet the above specifications, along with datasheets and indicative pricing.

Hello @ppradhan6787,

Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.

This is difficult needle to thread.

The Mitsubishi FX5U PLC has a 0-10 VDC input with a 12-bit ADC. Consequently, we must keep the distance sensor as close as possible to the specified 50 to 250 mm range.

As a starting point, consider the Banner Q4XFILAF310-Q8. It features:

  • 4-20 mA output
  • 35 to 310 mm sensing range
  • Accuracy shown in image below

Cost could be reduced by relaxing the specification. For example, a SICK 1104069 has digital outputs. There may even be good reason to use two digital sensors to construct windowed logic (higher than X but lower than Y).

Sincerely,

APDahlen

P.S. Use a 500 Ω resistor in a current loop to convert a 4-20 mA signal to a 0-10 VDC signal.
