Do Evaluation Kits like NRF5340-DK Come with UL/CE/Similar Marks?

Evaluation and development kits like NRF5340-DK are an integral part of modern product development and prototyping, allowing designers easy, accessible ways to familiarize themselves with increasingly complex modern devices. We periodically get questions concerning these boards’ UL, CE, or similar safety standards organization documentation, searching for marks or file numbers customers can reference.

These devices do not and will not come with such documentation, however. UL, CE, and similar organizations throughout the world are concerned with end-user safety, while these boards are designed for laboratory use by engineers and technicians who are assumed to know what they’re doing and will follow proper safety procedures. As this testing can be quite expensive and these boards are not intended for integration into end-user products directly, they don’t carry safety org certification.

Evaluation and development kits like the nRF5340-DK are not supplied with UL, CE, FCC or similar safety certification marks because they are intended for the use of lab and engineering, not for incorporation into finished products. These are designed for the person who follow proper safety practices in controlled environments, and full safety/EMC testing for production use is neither performed nor provided for evaluation kits.

If you intend to bring a product to market on the basis of nRF5340, you would need to select or design a final product and then pursue certification (CE/FCC/UL/etc.) and the product must be according to the relevant standards. Evaluation boards themselves are typically excluded from regulatory certification because they are not intended for end-use sale.
