DT06-2S Mate : Incorrect Assumption

This is a quick post, but should be helpful as other series may share other conventions. We have received, on occasion, requests for DT06-2P assuming that is the mate to DT06-2S. Many assume you keep the same numbers and just add an “S” or “F” for the mating half of the initial connector. There are some series that follow this convention, but it’s somewhat inconsistent. The actual mate for the connector is DT04-2P (1734-1018-ND).

Even though naming conventions follow a pattern, legacy parts may not always follow the same naming scheme. I’ve come across similar series where the same assumption is made and it often leads to no results. The datasheet does list DT04-2P-XXXX as valid mates (there may be other digits after 2P).

This is a great point, Kaleb, and really highlights the importance of understanding the entirety of the part numbers when attempting to find associated products. Mil-Spec Circular Connectors come to mind especially; many times it is tempting to assume the series is a specific sequence despite only part of the assumption containing truth.

In the instance you provided above, one might think that the DT06 is the series as you stated. But we have to remember that plugs typically mate with receptacles, and pins mate with sockets. So when series components match for connectors, there really should be two portions of the part number changing. This means that the series is not DT06, but rather just DT. The 06 denote the plug while the 04 in DT04 denotes the receptacle. The following snippet was found in the full catalog. I’ve been wrong enough times that I now always look for documentation to back up my assumption.
