Electronic Commutation Motors

EC Motors (ECMs) are a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor which are driven from internal control circuitry. The AC powered models require AC voltage to operate, but the motor rotates from DC power provided from the internal speed control circuitry. These are inherently more efficient than the AC shaded-pole and permanent split-capacitor (PSC) motors.

Advantages of ECMs:

  • Most EC motor electronics are protected against voltage overload, low voltage conditions, phase loss, power surges, locked rotor and overheating
  • The gradual ramp-up to maximum output and gentle soft stops reduce stress and wear and tear on motor components
  • Variable speed compared to permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors which run at a constant speed
  • Programmability - some models offer programmability based on input or fan operating conditions
  • Higher efficiency when compared to AC motors operated on variable frequency drives (VFDs)
  • Cooler operation due to higher efficiency, lower temperature promotes longer bearing life
  • Internal drive circuitry promotes a cleaner space saving design
  • Ball bearings reduce or eliminate the need for lubrication
  • Smooth and quiet ‘hum-free’ operation
  • Low maintenance
  • Lighter weight
