I can't get this build to work with the FSP-FC250, FSP1600-29FM, and Supermicro X12DPI-N6

Hello.
I bought an FSP-FC250 and an FSP1600-29FM for my Supermicro X12DPI-N6 in a custom case, but although I’ve connected them, the system won’t start up. The BMC boots up, so standby power is present. When I press the power button, the voltage on the PSON pins drops to 0 V for a second and then rises to 3.6 V a second later. Meanwhile, the voltage on the PWOK pin remains at 0 V the whole time. When I connect a standard ATX power supply, the system boots up. I have tried with and without the SMBus cable connected, but the result is the same – the system does not boot. When the cable is connected, the BMC web interface (IPMI) displays information about the power supply unit and the fan speed. The LED on the power supply unit simply flashes. I am currently working with a single FSP1600-29FM power supply; before that, I tested it with two (I borrowed them temporarily for testing). Could you please advise whether this chassis and power supply are compatible with the Supermicro X12DPI-N6 motherboard? Perhaps you have already encountered this issue and have information on how to get them to work together.
Thank you in advance.

Hi @themadgermany and welcome to the TechForum!

A few basic questions to narrow it down:

  1. What cables are you using to connect the FSP-FC250 to the motherboard? Did they come with the FC250, or with the case?
  2. Are both 8-pin CPU power connectors on the motherboard connected? Per the X12DPi-N6 User’s Manual, p. 55, both JPWR2 and JPWR4 need to be populated.

If the cabling checks out and the board still won’t power on, Supermicro’s support portal, would be the next step to rule out a board-level issue.

Hi Jon_11475,

I connected the cables that came with the kit, first with one processor and one RAM module installed; all the other slots were left empty for testing. I also tested it with two processors. All cables are connected: one 24-pin and two 8-pin cables for the CPUs. As I mentioned earlier, the entire system boots from a standard power supply (ATX) and runs without any issues, the only thing missing is the statistics in the BMC. Why do you think the problem is with the motherboard?

Hi @themadgermany

I overlooked your earlier comment that the system runs fine on a standard ATX supply. Sorry about that.

Are all connectors on the kit’s cables plugged into the FC250, including any smaller secondary connectors?

Was the FSP-FC250 purchased from DigiKey? If so, I can reach out to FSP on your behalf to look into this. (message me your invoice number)

Best regards!

Hi Jon_11475,

Yes, all the cables are connected to the FC250 (P1, 2xP2, P5 and P7), as well as to the motherboard (ATX 24-pin, 2xCPU 8-pin and SMBus). Yes, the FSP-FC250 was purchased from DigiKey, invoice number Redacted. I would be very grateful if you could contact FSP to sort out this situation. When I contacted FSP’s technical support myself (via the website www.fsp-ps.de), I was told: “We value each of our customers. Unfortunately, based on the serial numbers (SNs) and part numbers (PNs) provided, we cannot find any corresponding records in our system. As a result, we are unable to process this request further at the moment. However, the information you provided is very important to us. If we receive any further information in the future, we will share it with you. Thanks.”

Perhaps we’ll find a solution to this situation then.

Best regards!

Hi @themadgermany

Thank you for confirming, and for the details on your contact with FSP. I’ll reach out to FSP on your behalf and follow up with you directly at the email address on file for your DigiKey account.

Thank you. I look forward to your reply.

Best regards!
