Modular Cables – Reverse vs. Straight

Modular cables can be confusing to identify. One would assume with terminology such as reverse or straight that it would coordinate with the arrangement of the wires, but factors such as tab orientation need to be considered. I’ve broken down how to identify the modular cables for you below:

Reverse:

• With plugs opposite of each other: colors are in same order
• With plugs side by side: colors are inversed in order
• Typically used for phones and voice systems

Straight-through / Standard:

• With plugs opposite of each other: colors are inversed
• With plugs side by side: colors are mirrored
• Typically used in Ethernet cables
