Need help identifying two unknown components

Hi everyone,

I’m cataloguing my personal electronic component stock and came across two components I can’t identify. Any help would be greatly appreciated!


Component 1

Marking on body: “OA-38A”

  • Package: small metal cylindrical can, approx. 10mm long, both leads bent 90° and coming out from the same end (radial-style leads on an axial-looking can)
  • No polarity marking (no “+” sign, no colored band/dot)
  • Multimeter tests so far:
  • Diode mode: no reading in either direction (OL both ways)
  • Resistance mode: OL (open circuit) in both directions, no visible charging behavior
  • No capacitance meter available to confirm a capacitor hypothesis
  • Unknown origin (found loose in my parts stock, no board/device context available)


Component 2

Marking on body: “2000CMY”

  • Package: small blue disc, 2 leads, non-polarized (no polarity marking)
  • No other text or codes visible on the component

The first item, “OA-38A”, is most likely a cylindrical crystal used for oscillator circuits. That body type is typically for through-hole applications, but as in your case, they sometimes form the leads so they can be laid down sideways on the board and soldered surface-mount style. The vast majority of crystals of that body type are for kHz-range frequencies, particularly the common 32.768 kHz frequency used for keeping time.

Unfortunately, I can not say what frequency your particular part is. The “38” may well indicate 38 kHz but it’s not uncommon for the frequency to not be marked on the part. It is still quite likely 32.768 kHz, as that is far and away the most common frequency.

My best guess for your second component is probably a 2.000 MHz ceramic resonator. Ceramic resonators are often used as a less expensive, though less accurate alternative to a crystal. It would be similar to some of these.

First seems likely to be a crystal of some sort. The package is a fairly common lead-formed variant of a radial can package that accommodates use as a surface-mount component.

Second bears a vague resemblance to a mica/PTFE type capacitor, though that seems not terribly likely to me. HWZT-2.00MD is an example of a 2-terminal resonant element that might be a distant cousin, and which would fit a theme of a box of frequency-selective things.
