However, the manufacturer of the DS1687-5+ has changed the lead time five times to date (from February 11th to February 18th, then to March 2nd, then to March 4th, then to March 20th, and now again to March 27th). We tried contacting customer service, but the only response we received was a repeated response stating that the lead time change was based on information from the manufacturer and they couldn’t force the manufacturer. We also tried requesting expedited shipping, and on March 10th, a customer service representative, Denise ext. 11102, told us that their supervisor had informed us that our item was already in shipping. However, on March 12th, we received an email from Digi Key notifying us of a change in lead time from March 20th to March 27th.
Because of these repeated changes, which occurred five times, we received a stern warning from both the user and management, and were asked to cover the costs of Digi Key and the manufacturer’s mistakes by paying the company’s losses until the item arrives. This is very unfair to us.
So, please help us. Is there a replacement item that has the same function as the DS1687-5+? If so, please let us know. If we agree, we request a discount (a refund if the item is cheaper after the discount) and cover the shipping costs as a form of apology from Digi Key for the inconvenience caused.
We then checked the price of the item you provided, which is $3.89 more expensive than the DS1687-5+ we previously ordered.
Please give us the same price as the DS1687-5+ that we previously ordered at $25.6 as a form of compensation for us who have been waiting for up to 1 month with 5 changes in lead time and no certainty about when the goods will actually be ready.
Yes, it is the same part but with extended temperature range.
Well, yes, the industry range device is 4 USD more expensive for one unit. If that is more than the company losses that you must otherwise cover, I’d say just pay the losses and walk away.
Cheers, heke (Disclaimer: I do not work for DigiKey)
I agree that DS1687-5IND+ would be a suitable replacement for this product.
Our department, Technical, is not able to offer discounts on product.
What we can do is as soon as you start seeing supply chain issues/line down situations it would be recommended to get us involved here, or email ( techs@digikey.com ) or call and ask to speak with Technical and see if we have anything we can offer that is more readily available.
We don’t know if the DS1687-5+ we previously ordered will be discontinued or what. The lead time for the DS1687-5+ we ordered has been changed 4-5 times without any clear explanation.
We also tried to request expedited shipping in early March, but the lead time keeps changing. Every time I check with the agent, the answer we get is always that the lead time change is based on information from the manufacturer. In our opinion, that’s not an answer, but simply a continuation without any effort to review or urge production to provide clarity. The lead time for a single item changing 4-5 times is simply unreasonable.
We also work for a company, where we have deadlines and performance that will affect our value. If, as Mr. Heke said, if that is more than the company’s losses that you must otherwise cover, I’d say just pay the losses and walk away. That’s very unfair to us, as it will affect the company’s assessment of us. If you were in our position, would you be willing to pay for losses that were not caused by your fault, but by an unscrupulous manufacturer?
So, I hope you can help us confirm with the manufacturer whether the DS1687-5+ we ordered will still be fulfilled. so that we don’t have to wait without clarity like this, then we can provide certainty to management and make the right decisions.
You may need to include this kind of situations to your project contract. You cannot export your poorly negotiated liabilities to your suppliers.
What is happening here, I am guessing (but not claiming), is that the particular component is under high demand by some key customers of ST, and the estimated delivery time gets changing, because they buy all the available chips. If you are buying 1 pcs vs. someone buys 10kpcs, kindly guess who has higher priority? That is not fair, but that’s how it is.
You may try some alternatives. I hope DigiKey does not mind the links to competitors…
If above options do not work for you, you may need to explain your situation in more detailed fashion (e.g. what is the actual problem with the industrial grade part).
