One thing seems strange to me is on a schematic it works from left to right (sort of), but on a layout it works from right to left can this be explained or is it a silly question

Thank you for your post.
Some of this can depend on the manufacturer and how they have their datasheets or drawings laid out and whether they are top view or bottom view compared to the footprint.
Your question is not silly and most likely something that a large volume of people has thought themselves as well. It is something to definitely keep an eye on when looking at footprints vs schematics and make sure you have your layout oriented properly before finalizing.
