Smart Power Strips with Master Input

I ran into an issue when I updated my surround sound with a 5.1 speaker that has a powered subwoofer. I didn’t want the sub on all the time when the TV is off. The sub has a remote-wire input (on/off switch) and my amplifier doesn’t have the remote-wire feature. To find an easy fix to turn the sub on only when the tv is powered, I used a smart power strip. This type of power strip has a master input and usually a few peripheral outputs. The power strip can switch off the output devices when the master device goes into standby mode. The strip can do this because, even when equipment is off and still plugged into an outlet, there will be a small amount of power being used. So, the power strip can detect when the master device such as the TV is in standby mode to be able to cut power to the peripheral devices.

IME sensing power strips still work when the master device goes to zero current draw when off. At least all of them I’ve used over the past 40 years act this way. Essentially any current draw below the set point turns the peripheral outlets off.
