Will the Soracom 4573326591584 4G LTE USB Modem work with Ubuntu 14.04?
@DigiKey_Internal
Hello Team,
Are any of you familiar with Ubuntu 14.04?
Hello Blake,
Thank you for using the tech forum and welcome to our community.
Our team is looking into your question.
It does state that it is compatible with Linux; Onyx USB Cellular Modem | Soracom; “The device works on Linux hosts, with no driver installation necessary for most Linux systems.”
I could not find any reference to specific OS releases though.
William,
Thanks for the feedback. Could you please reach out to Soracom and see if they can provide confirmation?
Thanks,
I will certainly reach out to the Soracom PM and PS here and ask for a response.
Hi Blake, yes the Soracom 4573326591584 4G LTE USB Modem should work with Ubuntu 14.04.
Diane,
Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it.
Blake, I believe I’m going to contradict myself. Per Soracom CRE, the Soracom Onyx dongle is designed to work with Debian-based Linux distributions. As Ubuntu 14.04 achieved end of life status before the Onyx was released it has not been tested with this specific kernel. The newest version of packages that the Onyx uses to make connections on Linux such as Network Manager and Modem Manager may not function properly on an out of date kernel.
If you have further questions about using the Onyx with Ubuntu 14.04 or other Soracom products and services, please open a support ticket through your Soracom account so that our Customer Reliability Engineering team can assist you further.
Hi Blake, my engineering team has continued to do some investigating on your original question and we have some additional insight to share.
Regarding your original question “will the Soracom 4573326591584 4G LTE USB Modem work with Ubuntu 14.04,” the answer is: it depends.
Ubuntu 14 is using the following kernel version:
- Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.04.1 both had the 3.13.X kernel.
- Ubuntu 14.04.2 brought the 3.16.X kernel.
- Ubuntu 14.04.3 brought the 3.19.X kernel.
EG-25 is supported according to Quectel for:
Software Features USB Serial Driver: Linux 2.6–5.4 MBIM Driver: Linux 3.18–5.4 GobiNet Driver: Linux 2.6–5.4 QMI_WWAN Driver: Linux 3.4–5.4
using USB identification: VID: 0x2c7c PID: 0x0125So it depends what kind of connectivity they plan to use.
If they connect via serial and do a PPP it should work.
They can use GobiNet as well. For MBIM they need at least Ubuntu 14.04.3.QMI- WWAN is not supported. But they can add QMI support by themselves according to the Quectel guide and compile their changed kernel.
Blake, I hope this is help. Please let us know if you would like further clarification on anything here. Thanks!
Diane,
Thank you very much for the feedback. We have Ubuntu 14.04.1, but our kernel version is 4.4.0.
