TE, Butt Splice 680329-000: No Heat Shrink?

TE’s Aerospace, Defense and Marine division handles many of their rough-environment or demanding application products. One product under this division’s oversight is 680329-000, a simple butt splice for connecting two wires together. We’ve had a few questions recently on why this product arrives without any sort of insulation or heat shrink; is this normal, and if so why?

Arriving with no heat shrink or insulation is indeed normal and expected for this butt splice, which is listed on DigiKey’s website as “non-insulated”.

This is usually done both to lower production costs for the splice, and to allow users in particularly unusual or demanding environments to determine the form of insulation that works best for their specific requirements. Not all splices require insulation, and in many cases an uninsulated splice is preferred over an insulated one.
