We’re a small German startup (pre-production) developing a consumer product that uses two units of the Ymin SLD4R2L7060825 (70F/4.2V Li-Ion Supercapacitor) as its only energy storage elements — no separate battery.
We’re trying to get UN38.3 test documentation, RoHS DoC, and clarification on whether this part counts as a “battery” under EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, before placing our first order.
Status so far:
Contacted Ymin directly — they responded and are reviewing our request, but asked for company vetting info first (we’re a newly-formed company, still gathering some of that).
Contacted DigiKey’s Environmental documentation team (ticket #47467058) — they asked for a prior PO/Invoice, which we don’t have since we haven’t ordered this specific part yet.
Does anyone know:
Whether DigiKey holds UN38.3 documentation for Ymin parts independently of an order, or whether it’s always sourced fresh from the manufacturer per request?
Whether there’s a faster path for pre-order documentation requests specifically?

Welcome to the TechForum, most companies want to know who and why the information is needed before spending resources for requests for documentation. They also like to know you’re getting parts from them and not just using resources so the request for a PO or Invoice.
Thanks for the context, that makes sense. To clarify: we do intend to purchase directly from DigiKey rather than just requesting documentation for free – we’re just blocked from committing to a larger order until we know the part meets our compliance requirements.
Since the part is in stock, we’re happy to place a small initial test order (e.g. 10–50 units) as a good-faith purchase while we confirm everything checks out, if that’s what’s needed to move the RoHS/UN38.3 documentation request forward. We actually already asked this same question directly to DigiKey support via email, but wanted to follow up here too in case this is a faster channel.
Could you let us know what quantity or purchase would be sufficient on your end to proceed? Happy to share our company registration details via email as well if that helps.
A purchase of any quantity should suffice, and would in any case be a needful step in the construction of a prototype to validate the design. There’s little point in following a paper trail for parts that may or may not meet a need.
Beyond that, it appears that backorders for the item in question are not being accepted at this time. If or when that will change remains to be seen, but designing in a product for which supplies are known to be limited seems a rather risky proposition.
Thanks for the input – that’s a fair point, and we agree a real purchase makes sense either way as a step toward prototype validation.
Given the backorder situation, we don’t want to design this part into our product right now while availability is uncertain. For our prototype, we’ll move forward with an alternative supercapacitor we’ve identified that’s readily available with full documentation, and may revisit this part later once stock and documentation are both in a better place.
