Unable to Detect STEVAL-MKI251A (LSM6DSV320X) Using STEVAL-MKI109D and MEMS Studio

Hardware Information

  • Motherboard: STEVAL-MKI109D
    • DigiKey PN: 497-STEVAL-MKI109D-ND
  • Adapter Board: STEVAL-MKI251A
    • DigiKey PN: 497-STEVAL-MKI251A-ND
  • Sensor: LSM6DSV320X
  • PC Connection: USB via COM4
  • Software: ST MEMS Studio

Issue Description

The STEVAL-MKI109D is successfully detected by Windows and MEMS Studio on COM4. The connection status in MEMS Studio shows connected.

However, when selecting STEVAL-MKI251A (LSM6DSV320X) from the device list, the sensor is not recognized and MEMS Studio displays the following error:

“The sensor has not been recognized. The WHO_AM_I register value does not match the device selected. Expected register value: 0x73, value read: 0x00.”

Observed Behavior

  • MKI109D connects successfully on COM4.
  • MEMS Studio allows device selection.
  • Selecting STEVAL-MKI251A results in WHO_AM_I read failure.
  • Software reads register value 0x00 instead of expected 0x73.
  • Multiple connection attempts and reconnections have been performed with the same result.

Troubleshooting Already Performed

  • Verified COM port enumeration (COM4).
  • Disconnected and reconnected USB cable.
  • Reopened MEMS Studio.
  • Re-selected the correct adapter board (STEVAL-MKI251A / LSM6DSV320X).
  • Repeated connection process multiple times.

Technical Observation

A WHO_AM_I value of 0x00 typically indicates one of the following:

  1. Sensor is not being powered.
  2. Communication between MKI109D and the adapter board is not established.
  3. Adapter board is not seated correctly on the DIL24 socket.
  4. MKI109D firmware does not support the STEVAL-MKI251A board version.
  5. Incorrect board orientation or connector alignment.
  6. Hardware fault on the adapter board or motherboard.

Questions for Technical Support

  1. Does the current MKI109D firmware support STEVAL-MKI251A (LSM6DSV320X)?
  2. Is a specific MEMS Studio version required for LSM6DSV320X evaluation boards?
  3. Are there any jumper settings or board orientation requirements for STEVAL-MKI251A when used with MKI109D?
  4. Can you provide guidance on verifying sensor power and SPI/I²C communication through MEMS Studio?
  5. Is there a recommended firmware update procedure for MKI109D?
  6. How can the WHO_AM_I register be validated independently to determine if the issue is hardware-related?

Error Screenshot

Attached: MEMS Studio screenshot showing:

  • Connection Port: COM4
  • Selected Device: STEVAL-MKI251A (LSM6DSV320X)
  • Error:
    • Expected WHO_AM_I = 0x73
    • Read WHO_AM_I = 0x00

Hello @allaka.praveen,

The STEVAL-MKI251A is supported by the latest version of MEMS Studio, as indicated by Table 1 of the User Manual. If the firmware running on the STEVAL-MKI109D is outdated, MEMS Studio should alert you to that and prompt you to update it. If you’d like to be sure it’s updated, please see the Firmware programming section (Section 8) of the User Manual.

I’m not seeing the screenshot(s) you claim to have attached. It would also be helpful if you could post a picture of your hardware setup so we can verify the jumper settings and board orientation. I would start by matching them to Figure 6 of UM3420.

I found the issue, it was the connection issue and finally i was probe into the sensor
