Unable to use my new MPLAB ICD5

------Question for DV164055 Please Put your question below------

When connecting my new ICD5 I can not see any communication on PGC and PGD but when connecting my PICKIT5 it works fine.

How do I repair my new ICD5?

Hello @anders,

I’d walk through the standard checklist:

  • Compatibility with your PIC as outlined in the https://forum.digikey.com/t/microchip-mplab-supported-devices/36813DeviceSupport document. Generally, the ICD5 can go anywhere PICKIT5 can, but I have not verified for all devices.
  • Latest software installed
  • From MPLAB select the ICD 5 programmer
  • Physical connections (see diagram below)
  • Correct resistors e.g., LCLR and any series resistors
  • Remove all your PCB devices connected to the programming pins. I’ve been bitten by this when things I thought were safe prevented programming.
  • Try to program a different PIC.

Please let us know how you fixed the problem.

Happy soldering,

APDahlen

If all the usual stuff doesn’t fix it, I like to search the official forum for help, starting with the section of the specific tool/part. Here’s the ICD5 section:

https://forum.microchip.com/s/sub-forums?&subForumId=a553l000001N5vTAAS&forumId=a553l000000J2pvAAC&subForumName=MPLAB%20ICD%205%20Debugger&forumName=Development%20Tools&page=1&offset=0

Thanks APDahlen. I’m using MPLAB IPE 6.20 and MPLAB IDE 6.20 my PIC (PIC32MX795F512L) is listed for ICD5 and PICKIT5, I have verified all 5 connections many times now, there are now resistors or capacitors on the PGC or PGD, I have tried a second board with PIC32MX795F512L and same result.

But when I switch to PICKIT5 it works. When I connect an oscillioscope på PGC and PGD the signal is flat. Is there some self diagnosis on the ICD5 or some other tests I can do to check it?

Regarding capacitors/resistors on PGC and PGD the datasheet PIC32MX795F512L says this:

None I am aware of @anders,

Recommend following @PaulHutch advice as there may be an activation trick or other solution to consider.

Sorry I couldn’t offer additional assistance.

Please let us know if you find a solution.

Aaron

How do I return this device on warranty?

That’s not good:

Contact a DigiKey customer support rep by either calling the primary 1-800-344-4539 number or use the web:

Hope to see you up and running soon.

Sincerely,
