Ive got a 78ish Pioneer SX-980 that the volume control knob is going out on it. Ive looked for a replacement & haven’t been able to find any really. I haven’t ever really messed with electronics until recently when i started a rebuild on my SX-1050. Would anyone have any ideas? Pioneer list it in their service manual as “Variable resistor (VOLUME) ACV-162.” the only writing on it is 3Y102K AG & some kind of symbol-165-A. Ive attached some photos, any help would be appreciated.
Hello @76bsohio,
That’s a nice amplifier!
I wish I had better news. Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to locate mechanical parts for those beautiful 1970 receivers.
There are a few options:
-
Attempt to purchase a second receiver for parts. This is unlikely for your situation, as I’ve seen similar units go for over $1000.
-
Attempt to clean the control as describe in this video using products such as this. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that this will work and there is risk of damaging the control.
-
Attempt to retrofit a modern control into the unit. This is a mechanical challenge to find a control that will fit. Take a look at this section to better understand the magnitude of the problem.
Sincerely,
APDahlen
Yes,I figured it was gonna be a pain in the butt to find one, if I even did. Ive cleaned it with contact cleaner, last for about 1-2 weeks before returning to where it was . I seen one from alps I kinda thought would work, but I’m not positive either. There’s a guy in NY that had them all remade from his design. As I understood he redesigned all of the faults only. Problem is he was wanting like 100.00 for one. I guess it might be cheaper than buying an older one parts. Then again maybe not I only gave 1k good my 980. The 1050 I inherited from my brother when he passed away. Thanks for your input.
