I have a varister marked 20S471K

the mfr logo is a low case “m” encircled by a square with rounded corners

who is the mfr and what will be the xref

Hi jim_west,

Not sure about who the original one was. Your description sounds like the Matsushita (a.k.a. Panasonic) logo, as seen on their capacitors:

However, I don’t recall seeing them mark their varistors with that “m” marking, and I don’t think they used the “S” in their part numbers or markings.

Regardless, the part numbering “20S471K” almost certainly indicates 20mm nominal outer dimension (typically round diameter, but occasionally square sided), and the “471” indicates nominal varistor voltage of 470V.

Looking at the part numbering of various varistors on the market, the “S” often seems to indicate either a higher than typical surge current and energy rating, or occasionally, a square body type rather than round.

Assuming you have a round type and possibly a higher than average surge rating, I would recommend any of the following:

Note that the “300” in some of the part numbers above refers to the maximum AC voltage of 300Vac. Those parts have the same nominal varistor voltage of 470V . . . it’s just a different way of calling out the same specs.
