I have a Velux 4646 2004 skylight (since discontinued) - it’s the model with an external solar panel that opens and closes without wiring it to house power. It also has the shade built into. The shade seems to work fine but the open/close function is either not working at all or opening internittently and very slowly. I see some references to people buying batteries from Digikey and replacing them themselves. Would anyone have an idea of the battery product I should get?

Unfortunately, DigiKey has quit assembling battery packs, so we would no longer have what you are looking for.
Just looking online, there appear to be a number of places that claim to have packs specifically for various Velux products, so that would be my approach to try to find something suitable. Sorry we can no longer help out with requests such as yours.

Had also same problem with my Velux. Instead of replacing the battery, I decided to operate the shade manually.
The battery is by Panasonic, thus should be of high quality. Suspecting that the charger circuit is sub-optimal for the battery.

Yeah, if you push in the frame where the battery resides, the shade can slide freely. I change the shade position only twice per year, thus no fancy remote control is needed.
