We frequently get asked about what happens when a Vivado Design Suite license expires, if the user can still use their software, how frequently it needs to be renewed or updated, etc.

Vivado has a perpetual license, specifically for the version of the software that is being used when you purchase the license and any updates before the warranty expires (a.k.a. the Version Limit). Typically this is a time period of one year from date of purchase, but if you are unsure contact either us or an AMD representative to verify the length of the Version Limit on your license.

To reiterate, once the Version Limit is past, you can keep using your software in perpetuity, but it is no longer eligible for updates. For more details please see [AMD’s FAQ page](https://www.amd.com/en/products/software/adaptive-socs-and-fpgas/licensing-faq.html#warranty).

Xilinx offers the software in two different styles of licenses, floating and fixed node. Floating Node License will allow your outfit to host the license on a server and delegate access to the software at the time of use over a network. This allows for any number of software installs and regulates entitlements based on a number of users vs the number of licenses host…
