Note that the above calculation comes from the general formula for energy stored in a capacitor, so it can be used for any capacitor:

  • E = 1/2 x C x V2
  • W-hr = E / 3600

where:

  • C = capacitance
  • V = voltage to which capacitor is charged
  • E = energy, in joules

However, the value calculated above assumes that the capacitor is charged up to the full 50V rating, so if it is charged to a lower voltage, then the total energy stored will be reduced.

It also does not account for non-ideal characteristics, such as self-discharge which occurs whenever a capacitor is not being charged, and the losses which occur due to the series resistance within the device which wastes some of that energy during discharge.

Furthermore, that energy value calculated above is the total energy stored at a given starting voltage. However, most systems can’t use all of the stored energy because the system in which the capacitor is placed typically has a minimum operating voltage, below which, the system will no longer function.

So, the usable energy stored in the capacitor is the total energy stored at the initially charged voltage minus the energy remaining at the minimum operating voltage level.
