I am looking for a local (twin cities, MN) electrical supplier or distributor that might offer complimentary training on the electrical crimping connectors they sell. Paid training can also be discussed, but my primary ask is to see what services suppliers might already offer to their customers.
We are looking for the following types of training subjects:
Types of wires- Solid and Stranded wires, cables and assemblies
Wire sizes and wire gauge basics
Types of connectors- Terminals and Splices, Pin and Socket/Sleeve for connectors like Molex and Amp plug/socket sets
Connector pin installation and removal tools
Terminal Strips and Grounding Buses- types of connectors, proper screw torque for terminals and compression lugs
Types of Crimp Terminals- Ring, Spade, Quick-Disconnect, Hook, Snap-Plug, Pin/Blade, Ferrule
Choosing the proper type of connector for the application
Wire cutting and stripping tool types
Crimping tool types and selection (including Non-insulated and barrel/full insulated connectors)
Note that these topics can probably be taught internally using online resources, but we won’t say no to an industry expert who will offer their experience on these ideas. Presentations by hardware vendors are much more accepted by techs than sitting in front of a PC.
While knowing what connector options are available is a big plus, the bigger thing is having some kind of hands-on demonstration by someone who knows these topics and tools, and hands-on practice with the participants. We want students who have actually used the tools and connector types by the end of the class. That’s the real goal here, but choosing the right connector is just as important as installing it correctly.
