Arcing relay solution?

We are currently using a relay with 16A rated contacts. When paired with a 24V 1.25A inrush 1.25A holding solenoid valve. When the relay releases, we are getting a spark between the relay’s contacts. We have tried a snubber and will be trying a diode soon. What other solutions are out there for spark suppression? Also, if I were to try an SSR, CC2327-ND (DR24D12R) what type of flyback diode is recommended. Thank you

Hello @anthony.churilla,

A spark occurs when the magnetic field of the solenoid collapses. What you describe appears normal with the caveat that I have not seen your equipment and there could be something else wrong.

A diode would suppress the spark, BUT the solenoid will be slower to release. This may or may not be a problem for your equipment.

Recommend a diode rated for at least 3 A. Example:
