Choosing DC resistance of an Inductor

Once you’ve determined the necessary inductance and inductor currents for your inductor, how do you choose a suitable DC resistance for it?

DCR

DC resistance (DCR) denotes the inductor’s resistance when subjected to signals with frequencies of near 0Hz. DCR value of inductor is normally low.

When considering the same size of inductors, the inductors normally will be

  • higher DC resistance if higher inductance
  • lower DC resistance if lower inductance

Please note that DC resistance is essential in determining the wire heating loss. Therefore it is necessary to choose lower DCR where possible because it can minimize the power loss of the inductor.
