Espressif Systems in Industrial Environments- Contacting an Application Engineer

Looking to find an application engineer to meet with to discuss the use of wireless IoT devices, specifically Espressif devices, in industrial environments. These devices would ideally be used for DAQ and smart system monitoring applications. I would request a meeting be setup between both parties to discuss more technical details.

Yes, a quick meeting discussing the effects of these devices in an industrial environment.

What temperature range do you need in this environment? (full automotive?)

Only the ESP8266EX and ESP32-DOWD-V3 can handle the full -40C to 125C, both of these are 2.4Ghz WiFi/BLE only.

I assume you need CAN, Espressif call it TWAI..

TWAI: The TWAI controller is designed to be compatible with the CAN 2.0 protocol. It supports both Standard Frame Format (11-bit ID) and Extended Frame Format (29-bit ID).

You’ll still need an external Can transceiver.

More or so how ESP-Now handles interference and how other wireless devices on the 2.4Ghz band maybe affected. I’m trying to introduce wireless communication for some low priority system monitoring and possible DAQ in our facility. IT needs justification from me or an application engineer to let me explore this further and deploy these devices. I appreciate the help.

So ESP-Now is a protocol that still runs on top of WiFi and needs to be connected to an AP device over WiFi (could be another ESP32)…

The current issue with these 2.4Ghz ESP WiFi devices, is congestion on the network. On the 2.4Ghz (in the US) spectrum we have 3 non-overlapping channels (1, 6, 11). Most deployments exclusively use these. If you were to use any of the other channels 2 through 10, these would overlap with the main 3, causing performance and network stability issues on those 3 main channels.

You can use Android’s or Mac’s version of “WiFi Analyzer” https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=abdelrahman.wifianalyzerpro&hl=en_US and check out your deployment to see how crowded 1, 6, and 11 are.

Currently the solution for this problem is more spectrum, 5Ghz. Espressif has announced the ESP32-C5 and newer devices, which support 2.4G and 5Ghz bands.

Personally being on both sides of IT, I’m not sure they are going to listen to a 3rd party.

Your best bet is to do an internal IT request to run these WiFi sensor devices on your IT’s network.

They are requesting to talk with an applications engineer from a vendor before even considering putting these devices on a network. They do not trust me enough to give them the evidence that this is a possible solution. They require, in their words, ‘professional insight’. Thanks.
