Recently, we received questions regarding the appearance of the corner tails and possible oxidation on the exposed pad of the ADI IC regulator LT3580IMS8E#TRPBF. There were differences between the actual part and what is shown in the datasheet.
To clarify this concern, we contacted the manufacturer, and according to them,
- The 4 corner tails’ appearance of the exposed pad depend on the leadframe design and molding process used.
- There is no change in the leadframe design for this part.
- The shape of the corners (e.g., whether they look clean or covered) can vary due to:
- How flat the leadframe is: which in turn affect how much mold compound flash will cover up the area.
This can cause slight differences in the appearance of the 4 corner tails when the corner of the exposed pad is covered by mold compound or flashes.
- What looks like oxidation is actually mold flash (excess plastic from molding process) on the exposed pad.
- Laser deflashing is used to clean off mold flash, but due to machine and process tolerances, some flash might remain.
The products are still acceptable since the flash is within 10 mils, according to LTC FVI Criteria (Analog Devices’ internal standard).
Therefore, even if the part looks slightly different, it is still functionally and mechanically acceptable.
