I want to use smd ATtiny85 in place of the Nano to drive the 2605, as the PCB must be no bigger than 12 mm X 20 mm. The (now disused) ERM (555) board is 12 mm X 11 mm. This is a medical project.

Did you figure out how to run this with an LRA?
I have exactly the same issues like you. Using the Adafruit breakout board with an arduino uno and a nano, my first thought was that the nano was bad, but got the same result on the uno. Program seem to stop when SDA line is connected, but runs without any problem otherwise.
Starting to think that the IC is bad. But will test it with an ERM to see if it runs.
