KEMET sells capacitors, among its other offerings. One of these capacitor offerings is the ALF70 series, which often come in 4-pin or 5-pin variations despite universally being two-terminal parts. What is the purpose of the extra pins on these products if they have no electrical function, and can they be cut off and omitted to simplify board layout?
Per the products’ datasheet, these pins are important for the structural stability of these generally large, heavy parts. ALF70 capacitors with extra pins have them to improve stability and board retention; while these pins are not electrically connected, they are nevertheless important for the longevity of the product in your system. It is not at all recommended to remove the extra pins.
