Nominal distance for magnetic proximity switch

The datasheet for part number 59065-010 shows a must actuate distance of 150 mils.

Is 150 mils the nominal distance or the maximum distance for reliable actuation of the switch?

Hello @pdefigh !

Thank you for posting to the DigiKey TechForum.

One moment please while we take a look at the inquiry to see what information we can find.

Thank you,

Victoria

@pdefigh,

According to the datasheet

on the first page, the 150 mils is the nominal distance.

The maximum distance is 800 mils. Please review the table here:

Thank you for your inquiry and welcome to the community!

Must Actuate means that given a magnet with the magnetic strength of the recommended Actuator, in this case Part Number 57065-000, the part Must Actuate (or Must Trip) at 0.150 (3.81mm) But it can actuate before that, let’s say at a distance of 0.160 (4.06mm) or greater.

If it actuates at a gap distance less than 0.150 (3.81mm) the part is out of spec.

Thank you for the responses. I appreciate it. I’ve gotten no response from Littelfuse.

My company uses this part, and it part definitely actuates with a smaller than 0.150 inch gap.

The max distance is also not .800. In my brief experiments, the part stops actuating around 250 mils.

Maybe more specifically, I wondered how fast the reliability of actuation dropped off after 150 mils distance.

Must Actuate and Must Release say that the switch/magnet system is in an unspecified state when the distance > 0.15 and < 0.8.

It might not turn on @ 0.151, but it can, or off @ 0.799, but it can.

However it will definitely be on @ <= 0.15 and definitely off @ >= 0.8

To design a system with this part and its associated magnet, you must make sure the unspecified state distance range is of no consequence to your system operation. Any other application of this part system is not recommended.
