Abracon is a versatile supplier offering many different passive and interconnect products, though they’re best known for timing devices like their ABC2 series of crystals. We’ve had an interesting case recently seeking clarification on pad discoloration with a shipment of received crystals and whether it qualifies as oxidation and thus bad parts. Is this the case?
Discoloration of this sort is not oxidation. Some amount of natural variation and discoloration on a solder pad is expected for most SMD parts and does not impede the device’s functionality. This is typical of the manufacturing process. Oxidation should be tested for specifically rather than assumed of any given bit of discoloration, if at all possible.
