Arduino Opta - Wiring - Parts, Selection, and Technique

I just ordered an Arduino Opta unit, not picked-up yet, to learn with and eventually apply to a project. I’m having a little difficulty finding information about wiring it up for either temporary or permanent installation. I went ahead and bought the WiFi Opta, Extension, and power modules in the first order, but held back from anything to do with wiring because I didn’t know size or compatible part information.

I came across a pretty good article with some hints about use of ferrules and wire routing, but I didn’t see any specifics with suggested part numbers and wire sizes. I held off from guessing parts until I can establish a list of parts I would need after this conversation is complete. Could you provide the part numbers of the ferrules used in that article? I’m particularly interested in that dual wire ferrule since it looks like a great technique to save on space, looks very clean, and is practical.

I don’t have any ferrule crimp tools either so I’m curious why the DKS-CRIMP-T2-ND crimp tool was suggested and not any other. I couldn’t find much information about that tool so I’m unclear why it was the only option listed in that article. Is it any better or more compatible with a wider variety of ferrules than other models or brands?

I’m also in need of identifying what wire size is needed. I think the wire spool in that article is called hookup wire, but I wasn’t able to identify the gauge and if it was solid core or braided.

I’m also looking to know how to wire up the HDR-100-12 power supply to 120V wall AC. Any needed special ferrules and will that crimp work with it? I have some 3 prong wire pigtails recovered from some retired appliances that I could repurpose if that is OK rather than buying a new wire harness.

Lastly, in general I didn’t find helpful information for someone getting started in the the world of PLCs that covered wiring techniques and whatnot. I would appreciate any tips, books, articles, forums, etc. that focuses on that topic so I can reference and learn.

Thanks!

Hello @Z3nD3sk,

Most of the Opta related articles are located here:

As for your questions:

  • Wire ferrules are a nice addition to the project, but are not required. The DKS-CRIMP-T2 is one of many tools. Technically, to maintain UL 508A code compliance, the tool should be matched to the ferrule. This is question of the ferrules installed according to the manufacture’s recommendations.

  • For wire, consider 20 AWG 3053 blue.

  • I’m hesitant to recommend any AC power solutions at this time as we need to consider electrical and fire safety. Personally, I like to use a 24 VDC laptop style “brick” power supply. The cost is low, and they are relatively safe.

  • For additional learning, please see the first link in my note. I have gathered a reasonably large number of articles there to get you started. Be sure to walk through the Arduino ACE 100 course (link in the Forum post).

  • Let me know if something is missing.

Sincerely,

Aaron
