Atmel/Microchip, 'AU' vs. 'MH' Suffixes

You might run across legacy Atmel parts from Microchip featuring one of two suffixes - ‘AU’ or ‘MH’. One example would be ATXMEGA192A3, which can come in AU or MH variations. What’s the difference?

The difference is in physical packaging of the part. “AU” indicates a TQFP package with gullwing-style SMT leads; ‘MH’ indicates a TQFN package with inset pad SMT leads. The IC itself performs the same either way, but they are not footprint compatible with each other.
