Question:
Can a double-pole relay open and close loads with different voltages and currents?
Answer:
It is possible if the relay is used within the rating, but caution is required when opening and closing a microload or when the voltage difference of the load is large, as it may affect the adjacent contact. Do not open and close a large load and a microload simultaneously with one relay.
Explanation:
Precautions when switching loads with voltage and current differences
- Generally, if the voltage difference between the loads is large, the contacts that open and close the high-voltage load may cause arcing, leading to a short circuit between adjacent contacts.
- For a relay that opens and closes a microload, the arc scatters organic gas and carbides when a large load is opened and closed. Carbonized materials scattered around the contacts and wear particles from the contacts may adhere to the adjacent contacts that open and close the microload, resulting in poor contact reliability.
Do not open and close a large load and a microload simultaneously with one relay.
