Clarification on Observed Gap – Traco Power TMR 9‑1223 Converter

For the Traco Power DC DC Converter TMR 9‑1223, if you have observed a gap between the circuit portion and the metal casing and are concerned that this may be a quality issue, please note that we have clarified this with the manufacturer.

For the image above, the visible gap between the potting compound and the metal housing can occur during the potting process due to normal curing shrinkage of the encapsulation material and differences in thermal expansion between the potting compound and the metal enclosure. This phenomenon is occasionally observed along the enclosure wall and does not necessarily indicate a manufacturing defect.

From a functional standpoint:
• Thermal performance: The primary heat dissipation path of the module is through the internal thermal path to the baseplate / case, rather than through the sidewall potting interface. Therefore, a small separation at the enclosure edge typically does not impact thermal performance.

Internal protection:
• The potting compound continues to encapsulate the internal components and maintain mechanical stability and electrical insulation. As long as the encapsulation coverage over the components is intact, the reliability of the module is not affected.
