Component Lifecycle Forecasts

A request we frequently receive here at DigiKey is for lifecycle forecasts, generally of the sort “How many years are left before [X component] goes EOL?” Clearly it would be fantastic if assemblers and end customers could get a guaranteed roadmap for the LTB and EOL plans of the components they buy. Can DigiKey provide these services?

Unfortunately, not at this time. Lifecycle forecasting is guesswork; manufacturers rarely lay out public plans of when and how their components will go EOL. The factors behind deciding to EOL a product are not merely time, but also how well the component is selling and whether or not certain high-profile customers are using the product in key ways. This cannot be predicted with keen accuracy ahead of time, especially by someone who is not the supplier.

We at DigiKey recommend any such questions be directed to the manufacturer directly, as they are best equipped to talk about EOL for their product. You may well be able to negotiate a deal with the supplier to extend the product’s lifetime, if your need is profitable enough. Even if not, the supplier will be able to give you the best available data on lifecycle forecasts for your desired product.
