How do I open the black top cover? I am trying to replace the battery and the cover will not open without me forcing it. Is there a trick to this? Thank you for your help and advice.

Welcome to the TechForum.
It does seem to be a bit tricky, but it’s just a matter of prying one side off of the little tab and then the other. I found a video clip from Adafruit showing how to open a very similar product at about 3:25 into the video.
It apparently helps that she has long-ish sturdy fingernails.
