The ESP32 series of RF modules from Espressif Systems are a backbone component for the Internet of Things. These popular modules are all over the place in today’s world, which means many people are using older versions of the part designated ‘U’. Newer ‘UE’ parts have updated firmware, but if your system was built using the older firmware for the ‘U’ series, are you out of luck? Do you need to redesign and update your systems?
Fortunately, this isn’t necessary at all. Firmware for older ‘U’ series devices is still perfectly usable on ‘UE’ series devices, though you would need to update your system and use the new firmware if you wanted to take advantage of the UE products’ enhanced security features. Effectively, you can operate the UE devices as U devices should you need to without any firmware issues.
