Is it possible to represent the life of the relay as durability in number of years?

Question:

Is it possible to represent the life of the relay as durability in number of years?

Answer

The time until failure, or relay life, varies depending on the load, frequency of opening and closing, and the operating environment. Specific durability in years cannot be defined.
More details include:
・Relay life involves contact life and coil life.
・The contact life as durability in years must be determined based on the customer’s load conditions from each performance value of mechanical durability and electrical durability.
・Polyurethane copper wire is mainly used for the coil, and the life of the coil is generally 40,000 hours.

Explanation

Relay durability

For example, G6K from the product catalog:

  • Mechanical durability is the number of times a relay can open and close the contact with no load, taking into account the mechanical malfunction and characteristics.
  • Electrical durability is the number of times a relay can open and close the contact with the rated load (125 VAC, 0.3 A / 30 VDC, 1 A).
  • Durability curve: When switching loads at voltages and currents other than the rated load, electrical durability can be determined by referring to the “durability curve.” To learn more about how to interpret the durability curve.
Refer to Relay Basics: General application, Electrical relay durability & lie cycle.

If the maximum capacity of the relay is exceeded, the life may be very short. Please select a product model according to the capacity of the connected load.
