Line Follower Kit Recommendations

As a project for the summer, my 7yo very much wants to build a “metal robot”. We’ve done a few robotics kits prior, including some VEX. I think “metal” is code for “more mature”. I’m thinking a wheeled line follower is a great next step for her, incorporating sensors and a little programming with lots of direct interaction.

Any recommendations for a line follower kit? Criteria are:

  • Quality build, not frustrating or overly obtuse

  • Preferably both line following and distance sensors

  • No internet/smartphone specifically required to operate

  • Arduino preferred, ideally able to be programmed by Scratch

  • I’ll be helping her, so it doesn’t need to be something a 7yo can do on their own - but she should be able to do most of the work with guidance

I’m looking at something like this, I just don’t know the company so I have no sense for the quality or experience: https://www.analogtechnologies.com/document/ZYC0043.pdf

@ccois

From the available information for the ZYC0043 it would seem that it would meet the listed requirements.

As for the quality of the item I too am not familiar with the manufacturer or vendor for the ZYC0043.

I found the AKX00066 which is another robot that the data shows that it can do line following to and it is from Arduino. Although I am not sure that the main chassis is made of metal.

@ccois Another option that may work is the XRP, 1568-28009-ND. This part number is for the full kit that comes with the 3D printed chassis. There are other part numbers for just the chassis and just the control components, 1568-28013-ND, if you can print your own.

We have a TechForum post going over the assembly of the XRP here.
