New DigiKey Website Capability: NPI Filtering

Engineers and purchasers face a constant challenge: keeping up with the rapid influx of new electronic components while identifying which parts truly matter for their designs.

I’m excited to announce that DigiKey has made this easier by introducing a new NPI (New Product Introduction) filtering capability on the website that provides a powerful way to quickly locate the most recent and relevant products based on how they entered the market.

With the new filtering capability, you can easily refine your search to focus on the type of innovation that best fits your needs; whether that’s cutting-edge technology, incremental improvements, or newly available sourcing options.

Introducing the NPI Types

Every new product added to DigiKey is now classified into one of three distinct categories:

  • New to Market
  • Line Extension
  • New to DigiKey

New to Market: cutting-edge innovation

These are brand-new product launches that did not previously exist in the market. New-to-market products often represent new series, technologies, or entirely new applications, making them essential for engineers exploring what’s next.

Product examples:

  • Innovative products that are breaking into the market
  • A next-generation Wi-Fi module enabling higher throughput and lower latency
  • A new sensor architecture enabling advanced edge AI capabilities

Why it matters

  • Access to the latest technologies and design possibilities
  • Early adoption for competitive advantage
  • Ideal for new product development and innovation

How to know if a product is a New to Market release?

  • The “New Product” banner shows up on individual product pages and product highlights

Line Extensions: Iteration and Optimization

Line extensions expand an existing product family with additional options or improved capabilities. Identifying line extensions helps engineers enhance existing designs or fine-tune specifications without starting from scratch. At its core, line extension is a new market release that builds on to a pre-existing series offering.

Examples:

  • A microcontroller series with added memory variants, footprints, or temperature grades
  • A connector family now available in additional pin counts
  • A passive component offered in new form factors or tolerances
  • A wire series with expanded color offerings

Why it matters?

  • Faster design decisions using familiar platforms
  • Leverage existing software, tooling, and design investments.
  • Incremental improvements without redesigning systems
  • Greater flexibility to optimize performance, size, or cost

How to know if a product is a Line Extension release?

  • Like New to market products, these products will also show a “New Product” banner on the product detail page and product highlights. To isolate line extension releases, utilize the Line extension filters in the Product Index and Category pages.

New to DigiKey: Expanded Availability

These products already exist in the market but are newly available to you through DigiKey. Because these products have pre-existed in the market, they are ideal for production builds and quick sourcing solutions.

Examples:

  • A well-known product previously locked down under exclusivity
  • Products from a newly onboarded supplier
  • New product offerings from a supplier as the result of expansions or acquisitions

Why it matters

  • Simplified sourcing from a trusted distributor
  • Consolidation of supply chains
  • Immediate access to proven, in-demand components

How to know if a product is a New to DigiKey offering?

  • The product will display a “New at DigiKey” banner at the product level

How to sort products by NPI Type

Locating these parts is a fairly easy process with filters existing at both the Product Index and within the categories as shown in the screenshots below:

Conclusion: A Better Way to Explore What’s New

With the new NPI filtering capability, finding the right new product is no longer about sorting through thousands of recent additions, it’s about zeroing in on exactly what matters to your project.

Whether you’re designing the next breakthrough or optimizing an existing system, DigiKey’s enhanced filtering makes it easier to:

  • Discover relevant products faster
  • Understand the type of innovation
  • Make more confident design and sourcing decisions
