Identify CPU family members and provide use cases

Answer

Currently, there are five hierarchical divisions in the Siemens S7-1200 family including:

  • CPU 1211
  • CPU 1212
  • CPU 1214
  • CPU 1215
  • CPU 1217

At the time of this writing, second generation S7-1200 (G2 PLC) are limited to CPU 1212 and CPU 1214.

Potential applications include:

  • Small machine control: The low-cost CPU 11 could be used for a small machine requiring no more than 8 inputs and 6 outputs. Note that there is some overlap with the Siemens LOGO!.

  • Mid-sized machine or process control: The CPU 1215 FC (14 input and 10 outputs) is a capable stand-alone PLC with integral safety functionality. The capability may be expanded locally using expansion modules of by using remote networked IO such as PROFINET. There is some overlap between the S7-1200 and the powerful S7-15000 such as CPU 1517.

Tech Tip: Both the LOGO! and S7-1500 have a small integral HMI. This may be useful for local troubleshooting.
