Sierra Wireless EM7421 not working on Win10

Bought this modem from DigiKey, and it works fine in Ubuntu 24.02. Didn’t have to configure anything.

On Windows 10, I installed the Win10 drivers from SierraWireless homepage, the Version 5087. Modem gets detected in device manager and is reported as working OK. But whenever I try to activate the modem, it instantly turns off. When I try to enter an APN, it says “Mobile data isn’t working properly. Try again later.”. The same thing happens in Windows 11.

I then wanted to troubleshoot this issue via AT commands. I successfully connected to the modems AT port via Putty and got back some status info from a few AT commands. However when trying to access the password protected AT commands, the default password gave me an error. < Edit - Redacted Password >

So I’m wondering if anyone could please help me with getting this thing working on Windows.
Also what’s the default password?

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for your post.

For issues with the AT Commands and default password you would need to contact the manufacturer directly as we do not have that information.

They have a chat function available, as well as a contact page that brings up a contact form that you can fill out.

I managed to get it working in both Windows 10 and 11.

I don’t know why, but the default password started working. I’m 100% sure I entered it correctly the first time, since I could read it back from putty. The password started working after I reinstalled Win10. Installed the drivers, putty and started up the AT COM port. Only this time putty didn’t show my input, but it still registered it. What was also different, is that i used lowercase characters to input the password. <Edit - Redacted Password >

So the solution was to change the modem mode to mbim with at!usbcomp=1,3,100d and then restart modem with at!reset. In mbim mode it even connected to the internet without drivers in Windows 11.

intz111,

That sounds great. I’m glad you got it working.
Thank you for keeping us posted on the results, and the solution.
Maybe it will help others that may have the same problems.

I edited your posts to remove the default passwords. The manufacturer treats these as sensitive info. I’m glad to hear you got this resolved.
