Solder for silver wire

Hello all,

can anyone suggest a solder that will keep silver wiring intact?

Welcome to the technical forum

There are some solders that do contain silver. Something like part number 2260-WBRC96432-ND on this link: WBRC96432 SRA Soldering Products | Soldering, Desoldering, Rework Products | DigiKey

I am not sure if you want this type as silver is less likley to tarnish. I hope this could be our intent on the silver. Let us know if this is not what you need.

Welcome to the forum.

Silver wire is very common in jewelry manufacturing and effectively never used in electronics for a multitude of good reasons (tarnishes easily, very expensive, etc.).

For soldering silver wire for jewelry buy sodler and flux from a jewelry maker supply like this:

For electrical use, plain old 60/40 tin/lead solder works very well you just have to be careful not to get the silver wire too hot. Very thin wire solder works best for soldering silver wire with 60/40.

Hi @PaulHutch,

Don’t forget the good-old days with Tektronix.

I have a pair of Tek 547 oscilloscopes full of silver solder for the ceramic standoffs. As I recall each has about 100 vacuum tubes and weighs about 80 pounds.

Cordially,

Aaron
