Frequently Asked Questions
What type of sensors are available and what can be monitored by an Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG)?
- We have a lot of different sensors applicable to the asset monitoring gateway. The bundle builder will really help you out with selecting those sensors from pressure, vibration, temperature, humidity, dew point, differential pressure, ultrasonic for level detection, a lot of different options.
How many sensors can be connected to the Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG) and how do you scale up the system when needed?
- Well, you start small and are able to scale fast. The AMG itself can handle up to 20 Modbus wired sensors, once again these applications when starting small, you start with the data point on the asset that makes the most sense, maybe it’s the motor you’ve had problems with in the past, start with a vibration sensor there, collect some data, trend over time to understand how that asset is acting and scale up from there from points of data you actually want to monitor and care about in the future.
What kind of support is available if any assistance during my installation or questions afterwards.
- Anything from Banner for the Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG) exists in the monitoring solutions area from within the DigiKey website. If you can’t find what you need there for installation or best practices, tips, tricks, or other collateral regarding monitor gateway please reach out to DigiKey support.
What kind of resources are required to facilitate the email notification of those alerts and what do those alerts look like on your cellphone?
- If you go with a CDS package (Cloud Data Services) version with the Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG), you can set up your alarms rather intuitively, and simply within that cloud site specific to data points, register information that come from the sensors attached to the box. You give it a text or phone number, an email address, or we can also route these types of things into TEAMs chat for maintenance teams to be in the loop for that AMG within the facility. If your threshold is breached on a specific sensor or data point, that warning will trigger directly to however you set it up in the cloud package.
What does the alarm indication look like?
- It can be a standard text message, a standard email, it will show the sensor and the register space that has breached a threshold that you have previously set up either in the device or in the cloud services area and it’ll give you a value and a difference for that threshold breach specific to the sensor. For example, if you label a sensor vibration of X axis, it will show the change over a certain amount of a threshold previously set and will show you that value.
How do you attach a vibration sensor to the motor?
- We have a couple different ways. The bundle builder tool will help with that. The bracket tree involved is really what is critical. At the most basic level we have double sided adhesive tape on the base of an aluminum bracket that sits directly on the sensor, and you can just stick things on. We also have curved magnet surfaces for bearings, rotors, or other curved surfaces as well as a flat surface mount. Once again, the bundle builder is a great tool so if you select a vibration sensor it will automatically prompt you with the appropriate compatible bracketry installation and accessories. The main thing to be aware of when installing vibration sensors specifically, if you are monitoring a rotating asset with a shaft in place you want to point the X axis indicated on the housing of the Q130BT vibration sensor directly down that path.
Are alarms possible without the Cloud Data Service (CDS)?
- The Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG) does not require our CDS package, it’s a great format for data gathering or management, to set up those easy alerts however it is not required. These devices can be connected directly via EIPs (Ethernet Internet Protocols) to different data loggers or data systems where you can setup those alerts in that environment as well.
How easy is it to connect via the internet so that a customer can see those alerts?
- For cloud space if you’re using Cloud Data Services (CDS), it just requires a login email, a password. The integration of the Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG) can be a cellular or an initial CDS package, a serial number for the (AMG) and a login credential which can be found on the HMI display. You type those numbers in it will autodetect what is connected to the device, and it populates into the cloud, it is that easy.
How can you assign an address to the sensors?
- You can do it directly from the HMI, the point of the device is ease of use and doesn’t require you to walk around with a laptop or PC that assigns these server ID’s, you can do it directly from the HMI interface on the local AMG.
If I had 3 air compressors that I wanted to monitor, what would you recommend for sensors and what would my cost be?
- For compressed air we always want to start with the most applicable sensor and in this case, I’d argue it is a pressure sensor as you want that total output after a tank or a filter. You may want to measure the dew point in the output lines as well which is also very important. If you get water in your compressed air lines, you will get a lot of down time and you’re not going to be able to manufacturer in a facility that requires dry compressed air. The other two I’d suggest are just simple vibration and current sensors. You can do vibration on the pump, or the actual compressor motor itself which is really easy to get started with our machine learning algorithms so you don’t have to be a vibration expert since you can trigger this algorithm baseline such as compressor start and monitoring to analyze data quickly and intuitively and understand it with the Data Management Services (DMS) from Banner. A standard system with 4 sensors with the Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG) will run around $2,500.00 to $3,000.00. If you’re going to do 3 sensors in this situation, we can do some simple wire replacement with wireless data radios. I believe each one of the R70 serial radios that are also available via the bundle builder and DigiKey.com are available for $199.00 on DigiKey so you could add those sensor packages to create data islands for those other 3 compressors if they are in the same room or pretty close to each other and only use one gateway to scale up sensors via data islands for those extra compressors.
How do you access the data that is gathered?
- Well, if it is the CDS (Cloud Data Services) version, that would be the way. We bundle a year of service with the CDS data plan activation of cell modules and data for a year for all versions that include a cell module, and the -C version which is a straight ethernet connection to the cloud. If you are doing the same thing through a data logging system, it is more so up to the end user such as a controls-engineer to decide what register space or what information they want to extract from the Asset Monitoring Gateway (AMG) and those maps are readily available and can supply them when asked.
What is the after-promotion costs of the CDS (Cloud Data Services)?
- It will depend on the actual data you are pushing and the number of gateways you have. If you have 20 devices pushing through one AMG, we have simple starter plans all the way up to an enterprise plan that can vary in cost depending on the data that is consolidated in the cloud and pushing to the cloud. But a simple yearly starter package is offered for these devices. Please consult with DigiKey regarding your application and costs.
