What is a transformer?

A transformer is a device that transfers electric energy from one AC circuit to another by either stepping up (increasing voltage) or stepping down ( decreasing voltage). This is done through electromagnetic induction. Transformers can be used in everything from power grids or even down to operating doorbells or model trains.
