Digikey says this product is obsolete and no longer manufactured MEZD41502A-C Monolithic Power Systems Inc. | Power Supplies - Board Mount | DigiKey but the manufacturer’s site says the product is still active https://www.monolithicpower.com/en/mezd41502a-c.html (at least as I’m writing this). Does anyone know what’s going on here? Is this an import problem of some kind?
I have submitted an inquiry to verify this item’s status.
Hi emeraldd.chris,
While waiting for further information on this, if you are just looking for a handful of parts and are handy with a soldering iron, one can convert the MEZD41502A-A to a MEZD41502A-C by replacing three components – C6, R2, and R3 – on the board.
Thankfully, “I” have what I need, but was hoping to publish a design others could build without too much trouble. It’s definitely doable, though kind of fiddily with how tight everything is on that board. Definitely an option though. It looks like the regulator chip itself is still available too, though I wouldn’t relish the idea of hand soldering that style of package.
Agree with everything said. Yeah, the chip is still available and seems like a really nice part, though that package certainly isn’t suitable for the novice hand-solderer – thus the value of the modules. Not clear what’s up with the obsolescence so far, as the notice we currently provide was created in-house. However, we wouldn’t have done so without good reason.
I would recommend against publishing anything using the module until the mystery is cleared up, at least.
The answer that we received from the Product Manager is that MPS doesn’t issue official PCNs or EOL notifications.
In regards to part MEZD41502A-C the factory stock that is available would be from 2017. And it was indicated that a newer date code would not be available or that new parts would be produced.
An inquiry could be made with MPS to see if stock is still available with the 2017 date codes if you are looking to order.
That answers the question then and tells me I probably want to find another solution. Thanks for checking.
