A customer asked what the difference was between ACPL-227-56CE and ACPL-227-50CE. The part pages do show identical information. Looking at the datasheet, it appears that the only difference is that the 56CE version conforms to IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5 standards while the 50CE version doesn’t.
Just because one of these parts doesn’t conform to that standard doesn’t mean it will be unsafe. This particular documentation is for compliance purposes only. This is similar to questions asked about UL, see this relevant post:
Your reading matches the data sheet. In Broadcom’s ordering information for the ACPL-227 (data sheet AV02-0752EN) the -50CE and -56CE are the same dual SO-8, tape-and-reel, RoHS part, and the only column that differs is the IEC/EN/DIN EN 60747-5-5 safety approval: only the -56CE has it. The data sheet even uses ACPL-227-56CE as its ordering example with exactly that approval plus 200% < CTR < 400%. Base specs like the 3750 Vrms input-output isolation are shared by both. So in practice the parts are electrically identical; the -56CE is the pick when the end product needs that optocoupler safety certification.
