Adafruit, Laser Diode 1057: Dot or Line?

Adafruit is a wide-ranging supplier and reseller of many different components, aimed at the hobbyist/maker community. Good for rapid prototyping and backyard engineering, one of Adafruit’s offerings is 1057, a laser diode. We’ve had a few questions on this part in recent days, mainly focusing on whether it produces a single dot or a straight line?

Per Adafruit’s documentation for the part, this diode is fitted with a lens that turns its dot output into a line output with a 120-degree projection angle from the diode. The lens is integrated into the unit and cannot be removed.
